thanks for the heads-up about goings-on in mid-town NYC, Earl
That was very hard to listen to

I prefer listening to this timeless version at the Capitol Theater
upstate NY in Port Chester

The boys respond to some freak-out screamers by stating, "Lighten fuckin' up, really"
on the track, just before FOTD starts

Hmmm, thanks for the utube link, Earl, as I couldn't get the official View one to let me see it just yet.

Have to admit I didn't mind the playing...not bad for straight up geezer circuit. And, objectively speaking, singing, other than Phil (sad), was OK, again for geezers that couldn't sing before...

So, I would rank it right in there with the worst of the worst of these folks (eg, as we have discussed before--Van Morrison is really bad these days, etc., etc.; Windwood is still good, blah, blah, blah).

All in all, about what I thought would be the case, and simply the cont'd negative trajectory that got me off the bus 25 yrs ago (ie, where I thought they'd be now, but again, started earlier than most geezers, it seems to me).

Gotta agree with Dire on this one. Yeesh.

Mean people might suck, but even nice people have to admit that was more of a train wreck than Amy Winehouse at a "Focus on the Family" picnic.

Did they interview with the gals at all, or was it just that stunning "performance?"

brief interview with Joy and whoopi only. Honestly, the music was better than the interview. I'm in the minority, even though I don't have a real interest in "the dead", I don't think it was that big of a deal to do the view. It's 2009 and the landscape has changed. I'm sure there were tons of older heads that thought the dead were out of their minds when they made a music video in 1987. I didn't see the whole thing but the audience was really into it so i guess that's the important thing.

I'm more interested in the interview than the music. Sorry, but I just wouldn't pay dime one to see "The Dead" at this point. (I've seen them previously...also The Other Ones, Phil & Friends, and Ratdog, and it all just leaves me wanting...guess it's a matter of taste...but I really did want to see them interact with the "gals.")

Is that portion anywhere on Youtube yet? (I agree it's not a big deal that they appeared on the show...I just wish they sounded better than they do.)

The interview was pretty weak actually. Honestly it was not all Whoopi's and joy fault. Weir and Lesh are really uncomfortable when it comes to this stuff. They were jumping in before the question was finished and some answers quite frankly weren't all that interesting. As for the dead, I agree with you - not what I need to spend my cash on these days, but i hope they do well for the folks who go see them. That is, if they see them. My friend said he still hasn't gotten his tix for Worcester and received notice that they are "working on it"

Thanks, Lobster...based on your description I won't waste time trying to track down the interview.

I still recoil at how lame Weir was back in '82 when he and Jerry appeared on Letterman. Jerry was relaxed and endearing and Bob spent the whole time being mumbly and incoherent and trying to wipe the coke residue out of his nose.

I dunno, I just heard a crispy SBD of a Stones concert from the rather small Palais Royale Ballroom in Toronto, from 2002, and they didn't sound all that geezerly (do I hear laughter out there? shh!). In 90's-era concerts, for instance, they had lowered the key of "Happy" from B to A, because Keef couldn't hit the high notes anymore....but now, it's back in B, and he sang it with passion and no cracked notes. I don't understand...but I like it, like it, yes I do. Of course, that's still 7 years old, but they started earlier than the GD, and should sound much worse. Satanic pact? ;)

Oh, I hear you...geezers vary wildly...some that saw the Stones 40 yrs ago think they suck...others think they are in the middle of the pack. I am not sure there is any objective analysis, BUT most agree that the likes of Winwood, Jimmy Cliff and a few others are still "good" but that others (again, Morrison, John Sebastian) have fared poorly.

I would rank these guys in the latter (fared poorly) category, that's all. Given that the guys on board, Bob & Phil, for me at least, had ALREADY stopped singing well in 73-77, the conclusion is obvious...for me anyhow...

Uppity borgeous (sp?) snob!!!

Is OK though, I've always hated the rolling stones... Agree on Winwood, never been a Led Zep fan but like a lot of what Plant has done since...

On my way to work, must run for bus... Hope I'm not getting too familiar 'round here!

I am a "geezer" that saw the Stones 37 years ago and think (or thought) they suck. Saw them on the Exile tour, last great album they ever made. Stevie Wonder & Wonderlove opened and blew them away IMO. Below is a link to pictures and reviews from the show I saw. Admission price was $7.50.
As you will read in the linked review what "sucked" in my mind garnered rave reviews from others..goes to show you don't ever know. One man gathers what another man spills.

And Richard Thompson just keeps on producing masterful work too often ignored by others. As does Patti Smith.

I've heard live recordings that prove the Stones don't suck(musically).

Richard's is a unique guitarist. I find his interpretations of both blues and rock-a-billy very enjoyable.

Jagger as a singer is ok.....but he's a one-of-a-kind showman. I suspect that he got his hands on the road map to the crossroads.

Stones Rock.

Which reminds me......ever see this??

Hey dreamer! I actually caught Yes on the tour you linked to. They were amazing! Coming off of Fragile and Close To The Edge, this tour was recorded for a live album. First laser light show I ever saw! Thanks for the link.. great days, great memories!
